I can learn everything about the right school or program on the internet…

Good luck!

Seriously, what you will learn on the internet is what the marketing and advertising firms hired by the schools want you to learn. Can you really differentiate one from another by reading their glossy internet/brochure? Does the internet tell you what type of student actually is at the school when your child is going to attend? Is your student soft and innocent and despite the glossy pictures you are sending your child to a school that is over run by tough kids? That probably won’t do him much good and unfortunately could do him/her harm. The internet is great when you know what you are looking for. When we send you to look at a school site it will be because we know the school and we know your child and we know it is a good fit. There isn’t a week that goes by that we don’t have a family that tried to use the internet and is now more confused than ever.

I just need to know what boarding school or program is good; can’t I just pay for a list of good ones and choose myself?

Ok. Suppose I gave you a list of good boarding schools or residential programs How would that help? You can probably get that right now for free on the internet. Now what? Suppose you call a boarding school or a treatment program and describe your child. The schools says “yes, your child would do well here.” You are about to spend 30-100k on a placement and you are relying on the person who will receive those sums to tell you if it is the right fit? Educational Consultants, the good ones, are fiercely independent. We take no money from schools or programs, so our 100% goal is to advocate for you and your child. Our job is to understand you, your child and the environment that will lead to success. There is so much more to it than just “getting a list of good boarding schools or programs.” That is what you pay us for and frankly we’re worth it.

My child is bi-polar and needs treatment, not an educational consultant!

You may be absolutely right that what your child needs is treatment. But that is only the beginning of the process not the end. There are so many questions that you will need to answer to be able to understand your child’s diagnosis and then make the proper decisions on his/her behalf. Treatment alone is just a word, but it is the process that can help make the difference for you and your family. For example; What kind of treatment? Do you need day or residential? What kind of environment will be most conducive to his/her success? What educational assistance does he require? Does he/she have skills or talents that should be emphasized? Our consultants travel nationwide extensively, visiting schools and programs and understanding the nuances that can only be derived by being on the ground, meeting with the owners, therapists and students. We work with hundreds of families with similar issues and can help predict behaviors and outcomes of options.

In this economy, why would I hire an Educational Consultant?

In a stagnant economy it is always difficult to make decisions to spend money on what appear on the surface to be discretionary services. However the odd part is, when you are going to spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars on a traditional or special needs program for your child, can you really afford to make a mistake, especially in this economy? Of course no consultant can guaranty success, but a good one can maximize the potential for a positive outcome and put you and your child in a position where, with commitment and effort, a favorable outcome is not just possible, but likely.

Let’s talk about success!

The media has been paying much attention to the failures in “adolescent treatment“.  From Boot Camp to Residential; there are horror stories of abuse and death.  It’s unfortunate that they are not taking as much time to define what these programs are vs. what they aren’t.  Even more troubling is that no one is taking the time to seek out the the overwhelming number of success stories.  Well, we are…

Of course, we could tell success stories.  Our stories would also highlight the value of having an Educational Consultant on board in the process BEFORE placement, but we want to hear from those who have these positive experiences…anyone?  We know you are out there…lets start sharing the other side of the story!
