If you have a troubled teen or an adolescent in crisis, you are likely being barraged by the many differing opinions on what do to help your child. There is no formula or rule on how to derive the proper treatment plan. What we do know is that parents are least qualified to make these decisions at a time when the entire family needs help. An Educational Consultant who works with special needs and has a strong clinical background can help families to see the big picture and look at appropriate options to begin the process of change.
It may seem strange to call an Educational Consultant when you have a child or young adult who is suffering from addiction or mental illness, but again, if the consultant is also a clinician, they can look at not only the academic challenges and goals, but the other issues that may be impacting the family system. A good consultant will have a strong working knowledge of local resources as well as the many out of home and out of state Traditional, Therapeutic and Emotional Growth Boarding Schools, Wilderness Programs and Residential Treatment Centers.
The internet has a lot to offer in the way of research, but before you place someone you love in a costly program, consider having someone on board who is not responsible for the admissions numbers of any one facility, but whose goal is to see that your individual needs are met and who knows not only the names of programs but the subtle nuances of each facility from ownership and management to case management and academic support services.
